In 2021, I was given an incredible honor by the Navy Special Operations Foundation (NSOF) and EOD tech Pat Flannigan. They approached me with a unique and meaningful project: designing and fabricating two statues for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) compound at the Norfolk Navy Base. This task was not just a professional challenge but a deeply personal one, as it allowed me to contribute to a cause that resonates with my family's legacy and my own respect for those who serve.
My brother, Taylor King, served as an EOD tech in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). His experiences and stories have always been a source of pride and inspiration for me. When Pat Flannigan and the NSOF reached out with this opportunity, I felt a profound connection to the project. It wasn't just about creating statues; it was about capturing the essence of bravery, sacrifice, and dedication that defines the EOD community.
**The Vision**
The idea for the statues came from NSOF and Pat Flannigan. Their vision was clear: to create statues that would stand as enduring symbols of the courage and commitment of EOD technicians and Navy Divers. These statues would serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made and the unwavering spirit of those who dedicate their lives to such a perilous and vital role.
**The Design Process**
Designing these statues required a deep understanding of the EOD community and the unique challenges they face. I spent countless hours researching, speaking with EOD techs, and drawing inspiration from their stories. It was essential to capture not just the physical aspects of their work but also the emotional and psychological resilience they exhibit.
**Fabrication and Installation**
Once I finalized the designs, the fabrication process began. This phase was both challenging and rewarding. Every piece was carefully crafted and assembled, ensuring that the final statues would stand the test of time. Seeing the statues in place, knowing countless EOD techs, their families, and visitors would see them, was incredibly fulfilling.
**A Personal Tribute**
For me, this project was more than just a professional achievement. It was a way to honor my brother and all the EOD techs who have served and continue to serve. It was an opportunity to give back to a community that has given so much. Working with NSOF and Pat Flannigan is a privilege, and I am grateful for their trust and support.
In designing and fabricating these statues, I hoped to capture the spirit of the Navy Special Operations community, to create a lasting tribute to their bravery, and to remind everyone who sees them of the incredible sacrifices made by these heroes. It was an honor to be involved, and I will always cherish this experience as one of the most meaningful in my career.
